Why You Shouldn't Wait: The Advantages of Taking the Current SAT Now
Learn why it would be better to take the SAT now and not wait until the Upcoming Digital SAT
This email is written by Program Officer Jasmine Ngo.
Tigerway Team Members, Parents, and Prospective Families,
Are you planning to take the SAT soon?
High schoolers, specifically current Sophomores and Juniors that are planning to take the SAT exam soon, should consider taking advantage of the current format of the SAT exam. A new version of the SAT exam will be introduced next year in 2024 with a completely new format and structure.
While Tigerway has some insight about the upcoming Digital SAT, there are still many unknowns about the test until it is released next year. Therefore, we highly recommend that students who have only prepared for the current SAT take the traditional SAT before any changes are implemented and it's too late to do so.
The SAT has been in use for many years with its traditional format on paper. Many students and test prep associations are also already familiar with its current format and structure. You can benefit from the extensive resources and preparation materials available for it, and develop strategies that are specifically tailored to its format and structure. This will help you to achieve the best possible score and maximize your chances of getting into the college of your choice.
Let’s take a look at a couple of sample problems from today’s SAT format.
Make sure to try these questions out first before reading my commentary
Writing & Language Question from the OCT SAT 2022:
This is an Add/delete/revise question (SAT EMERGING TOPIC). For these types of questions, it requires identifying key topics in each sentence of the paragraph and determining which one corresponds with the sentence that the writer wants to add, delete, or revise.
First sentence: Lemurs eat nitrogen-rich leaves to synthesize protein
Second sentence: Lemurs eat day and night for dietary needs
Third sentence: Lemur evolution is important for conservation purposes
The sentence that the writer wants to add talks about 2 traits that are important in protecting endangered primates (Lemurs). This means we will be looking for two described traits in the paragraph.
The sentence must be stated after the traits are introduced to the reader since it mentions the word “both”, referring BACK to the traits.
The only traits that are described above are Lemurs eating nitrogen-rich leaves and eating day and night.
Therefore the answer is C, after sentence 2 where both traits are stated.
Math Question from the OCT SAT 2022:
Let’s break this down:
We are looking for the probability that a point lands within the shaded region. We are given two rectangles, one within the other.
This means we will be looking at the area of the outer rectangle and the inner rectangle to see how much area is shaded.
Outer rectangle: 5 * 7 = 35
Inner rectangle: 3 * 5 = 15
For the shaded region, we will subtract the inner rectangle from the outer rectangle.
(OUTER - INNER = SHADED)
Shaded region: 35 - 15 = 20
The question asks for the probability of the shaded region out of the whole figure. The whole figure is 35 sq inches (the outer rectangle).
Hence, the answer is (shaded area /whole figure) = 20/35 = 4/7 = 0.571
The two questions I provided are representative of the many questions that are similar to those on the previous SAT exams. This presents an opportunity for you to leverage these similarities and prepare for the exam by studying previous exams, also provided by Tigerway, which can help you to take the test as soon as possible.
It is important to note that next year's SAT will feature new topics and questions that are online and adaptive. Levels of difficulty will increase, and the timing will be different.
Therefore, it is crucial to make an informed decision about whether to take the current SAT now or wait until next year. Consider your circumstances and goals and decide which option is best for you!
