Tigerway Students and Parents,
As you may already know, the College Board will be releasing a new digital version of the SAT in 2024. In anticipation of this change, Tigerway has been working hard to update our Digital Library with the latest content throughout the year.
Our goal is to provide our students with the best possible preparation for the new Digital SAT. We want to share some important information with you that will help you prepare for the upcoming changes.
In this newsletter, we will be focusing on two important types of questions from the Digital SAT Practice Tests that YOU NEED to know how to answer. I will be going over tips and strategies for approaching these questions so that you can perform your best on test day!
Make sure to try these questions out first before reading my commentary
New Reading Question on the Digital SAT: Researching Topics
How do we approach this question?
This is a science-related question that asks which added note would emphasize the difference between baking soda and baking powder. Let’s break down each answer choice:
A) The sentence focuses on what bakers use to make batters rise; it doesn’t emphasize the difference between baking soda and baking powder.
B) The sentence provides a general description of baking soda and baking powder; it doesn’t emphasize the difference between them.
C) The sentence explains what baking soda and honey are; it doesn’t emphasize the difference between baking soda and baking powder.
D) The sentence emphasizes a difference between baking soda and baking powder, noting that baking soda needs to be mixed with an acidic ingredient to produce carbon dioxide but the baking powder doesn’t.
Ask: which of these questions tells you there is a difference between baking soda and baking powder?
The correct answer is choice D since it explains the clear difference between baking soda and baking powder.
Hot Math Question that YOU WILL be tested on: Functions
How do we approach this question?
The question asks how to interpret the vertex of the graph. It is important to know that the function is in quadratic equation form y = a (x - h)^2 + k.
To understand this formula: a, h, k are positive constants shaping a parabola that opens upward with vertex (h,k).
With the given function f(x) = 1/9 (x-7)^2 + 3, we can see that a = 1/9, h = 7, and k =3. This means the parabola opens upwards with vertex (7,3). With the context of the metal ball, f(x) represents the metal ball’s height above the ground, in inches, x seconds after it started moving on the track.
An upward parabola means that the vertex is the lowest point of the graph, the minimum. A downward parabola means the vertex is the highest point of the graph, the maximum. The vertex also resembles the midpoint of the parabola.Â
Answer A is correct, the minimum height is 3 inches since the vertex of the graph is the minimum of the ball’s height (y = f(x) = 3 when x is 0).
The importance of these two questions:
The Reading question is a new type of question that will be introduced to students. The question gives the students a set of notes for a research topic and the student will have to choose what else to add to strengthen a key idea.
When approaching questions like this, it is important to read all of the notes carefully and pay attention to the specific details that are being emphasized. Eliminate incorrect answer choices and choose the option that best fits the requirements of the question. Remember to consider the context of the sentence and the notes as a whole when making your selection. Familiarize yourself with these types of questions.
The Math question is a traditional question that will ALWAYS be a hot topic: Functions. This is the #1 topic that all students need to know how to do well on the SAT. Many concepts on the SAT integrate with functions. Make sure you know your rules, formulas, and practice!
