Tigerway Parents and Students,
If you missed last week’s exclusive webinar with Coach Larry Cheung and Jack Delehey, be sure to watch the recorded version here: February Q&A Session
Coach Larry Cheung and Jack Delehey dive deep into discussing the new changes in future college admissions and next year’s upcoming digital SAT.
In this email, I will be writing to you about a brief recap of the webinar’s focus on the 4 tiers of college admissions.
High School Grades & Rigor of Classes Taken
In college admissions, it is essential to take challenging courses and strive for good grades as colleges closely look at your academic performance. Colleges will evaluate the rigor of the courses you take based on how many challenging courses are available in your school. A rule of thumb is that an A is much more preferred to a B in any class.
In the webinar, Jack mentioned that if you are ever contemplating dropping a challenging class, ask yourself “Can I at least get a B+?”. If the answer is yes, it's recommended to continue with the class and challenge yourself. However, if the answer is no, it's important to reconsider your options and evaluate how they could impact your future goals and interests.
Standardized Test Scores
Your scores on standardized tests like the SAT and ACT can greatly impact your chances of getting into the college of your choice. This is particularly true for the top 50 schools where the SAT is mandatory and acceptance rates are falling every year. For the top 100 schools, the SAT may be optional and can be helpful from a financial standpoint. However, campus recruiting from these schools, particularly from the top 50, places a greater emphasis on your test scores. As such, it's important to prepare well and perform your best on these exams for more future opportunities.
College Essays
College essays provide an opportunity to showcase writing skills and unique qualities and experiences to the admissions committee. It's important to take the time to craft thoughtful and engaging essays that reflect your personality, voice, and story…
Your Story: The Showstopper
Crafting a compelling personal story is the most crucial aspect of your college application. To make the most of your high school experience, you need to begin considering your future path and how your background and experiences can help you stand out among the highly competitive pool of applicants vying for acceptance to top schools.
Admissions officers want to know what sets you apart and what unique qualities and experiences make you who you are. Your college application should showcase your achievements, passions, and personal growth, highlighting how you've overcome challenges and developed into the person you are today.
Starting early is key to success in this endeavor. Writing your story early enables you to identify your strengths and weaknesses and craft a compelling narrative that speaks directly to your future pathway.
Don't wait until the last minute to begin shaping your story - the earlier you start, the more time you'll have to refine your message and make it shine.
The top 50 colleges are only getting more competitive every year. With access to information about colleges and their admission requirements, students are becoming more knowledgeable about the admissions process and are applying to more colleges in the hopes of increasing their chances of acceptance.
At the same time, top colleges themselves are becoming more selective in their admissions process, enjoying greater national and international recognition, thus attracting a larger pool of highly qualified applicants. In order to navigate this challenging landscape successfully, it's essential to understand the admissions charts and policies of your target schools, including how you compare to other applicants in terms of academic credentials, extracurricular activities, and personal achievements.
By breaking down college admissions into the four distinct tiers as mentioned, you can focus your efforts and develop a strategy for increasing your chances of acceptance to the college of your dreams. With careful planning, preparation, and attention to detail, you can stand out from the competition and earn a spot at a top college.
