Tigerway Team Members and Families,
March 9th marked a significant milestone in standardized testing as students in the US tackled a new journey with the SAT – a fully digital and adaptive experience.
The College Board introduced an adaptive approach, tailoring the test to each student's abilities, and presenting them with questions of varying difficulty based on their responses. This adaptive format aimed to provide a more personalized assessment of students' skills and knowledge.
Feedback from our students reflected a mix of views regarding this change. Many found the verbal sections to align with their expectations with a few tricky vocabulary questions. The consensus leaned towards that the math questions presented a challenge.
Students reported encountering questions that diverged significantly from the familiar patterns found in the College Board's practice materials and Khan Academy resources.
Below are the math topics that are tested on the digital SAT and how often they are set to appear on exams:
It is crucial to focus on studying the subjects that are likely to appear more frequently in the exam. For most students, studying broader topics will help them prepare for other topics and score higher marks, even with more challenging problems.
It's important to recognize that SAT scores are graded on a curve, taking into account the variations in question difficulty. This means that students who faced particularly challenging questions may find their scores adjusted accordingly, reflecting the relative difficulty of the test they encountered.
Despite the difficulties encountered, it's important to note that the SAT scores are graded on a curve, accommodating for variations in question difficulty. As we continue to experience the new Digital SAT, more colleges are switching from test-optional to test-required for their college admissions.
Scores are set to be released on March 22nd, and it will be interesting to see how students perform in this new digital and adaptive format.
