Dear Tigerway Team Members, Parents, and Prospective Families,
Congratulations on our Team Members that crossed Mega Star Status (1400+ of 1600) on the SAT:
This week we want to give the spotlight to Daniel S. . Daniel started with a 1400 on his first SAT and wanted to cross the 1500 margin. Through hard work and practice with private coaching, by the end of the summer, Daniel’s score soared into the 1510 score range! Congratulations Daniel!
Sneak peek of a Digital SAT Exam question
This question is from the Digital SAT Practice Test:
As you can see from this problem, there are a few things that students should recognize. Here are the focus points:
To subtract fractions, the denominator must be the same. The given expression has (4x-5) and (x+1) as the denominators.
Different denominators mean you must find the common factor between the two. If there are no common factors, you must multiply them with one another. (4x-5)(x+1) is the new denominator.
What you multiply with the denominator, you must also multiply with the numerator.
4(x+1)/(4x-5)(x+1) - 1(4x-5)/(4x-5)(x+1)
Continue to simplify and use factoring properties such as distributive property for 4(x+1) and -1(4x-5). After distributive property, you can combine the expressions and get 9/(x+1)(4x-5). The answer is A.
This question highlights some of the strategies and properties NEEDED to be successful in the math section. Knowing these strategies and properties should increase your ACCURACY in LESS TIME.
If you enjoyed this way of reasoning, schedule a brainstorming session with the Tigerway Staff Team to see if it is the right fit for you. If you have children who are currently Freshmen or Sophomores in High School, this email is particularly relevant for you. Learn more about the upcoming Digital SAT below.
The new Digital SAT will be introduced to all students in Spring 2024. It will still be scored on a 1600 scale and proctored at a school or a testing center.
Here’s what changed:
The material will be the same but sections will be broken into two stages in the following order:
Reading & Writing: two stages of 27 questions in 32 minutes
Math: two stages of 22 questions in 35 minutes
Total of 98 questions in 134 minutes = 2 hours and 14 minutes
There will be adapted sections to the student’s performance. For example, if a student does well in the first math section, the second section will increase in difficulty.
Calculators can be used throughout the math section. There will be a built-in graphing calculator in the app for the student.
Students can take the exam on their own devices, laptop, or tablet. However, if the student doesn’t own a computer, the testing center will provide the student with one.
Scores will be delivered faster-beneficial for seniors in the college application process.
How to prepare for the new SAT:
Tigerway’s material will still be very similar as most of the concepts will be the same.
For reading, Team Members are expected to read as a part of their daily routine. The more you read, the more your reading comprehension improves.
There will be one question per short reading passage
For writing, Team Members must master grammar rules to understand the building blocks of writing. Focus on Add/Delete/Revise as it will continue to be a hot topic in the SAT.
There is no longer a “No Change” option
Commonly confused words and idiomatic phrases will no longer be tested
The mathematics section will continue to test arithmetic, geometry, and algebra I & II. Team Members must master all the math content and formulas.
Responses can now be negative
Imaginary or complex numbers are no longer tested
For future SAT test takers (Starting with the class of 2025), we recommend using this time to practice the material before Spring 2024. For now, although the new SAT may seem tempting, we urge Team members to take the current SAT as soon as possible. The test prep industry has yet to create guides to beat this new format with strategy.
Team Members, be aware that the SAT is continuously evolving. Even though some universities made their admissions test optional, it is always best to have everything to build a strong academic foundation. Universities are not test-blind.
