Dear Tigerway Team Members, Parents, and Prospective Families,
Here at Tigerway, in addition to working on mastering the strategy needed for large score jumps, we are covering the approach needed to get into top schools.
A key insight from this week: Early Decision (ED) admission rates at top schools are nearly three to four times higher than regular decisions so applying for ED, even though it is binding, can greatly increase your chances of getting into a school.
This week’s lesson structure was as always a blend of content coverage, drills, strategy, and real-world applications.
Mathematics
Mathematics this week had a strong focus on predicting outcomes and how to efficiently analyze data.
Some topics we went into detail on:
→ Scatter plots, which contain measured data points. Using statistics, we can predict outcomes from the behavior of the measured data, and we can create a line of best fit.
→ Standard deviation, the measure of the spread away from the mean. Then, we went into the real-world applications of this statistic and how it specifically can tie into investments to powerfully make predictions.
Insight: The SAT doesn’t ask how to calculate standard deviation, but it will ask you to interpret its meaning. Knowing what it is and how it is applied is crucial to mastering these questions.
→ Margin of Error, which is important to know in the context of statistics and confidence intervals. We reviewed confidence intervals and what they represent (how sure are we that the true mean of a population lies in a certain interval? 95% sure? Or 99% sure?)
→ Causation vs. Association. Association between two things does not imply causation. We reviewed specific examples to help solidify our understanding of these overarching concepts in statistics.
→ Middle Tangent. A real-world example: the job market for CS is very competitive as of right now, so Tigerway warned students to be careful if that is what they want to pursue, and make sure you are passionate about whatever it is that you are pursuing in college, and beyond. Hard work will yield results, but combined with passion, the results are far superior.
Grammar
This week’s English focus was on punctuation, as knowing exactly when to use each form of punctuation will save students from some of the most common errors in SAT grammar.
We went over a type of punctuation, then immediately did drills to test understanding. Students left this class with a grasp of the important differences and use for commas, semi-colons, colons, and dashes.
Finally, we ended English with an important insight into History. Knowledge of world history is a skill that broadens your ability to connect with many diverse groups of human beings, and Coach Larry Cheung has been able to utilize this skill and knowledge to bring more members into his investment community.
Thanks for another successful weekend Tigerway! As always, Tigerway prepares their members through insightful methods of understanding the content that will show up not only in the SAT but in real-world applications.
Good luck with the next SAT exam and keep working hard Tigerway team members!
