Dear Tigerway Team Members, Parents, and Prospective Families,
Choosing a University can be complicated and stressful. However, if you do the right research you can find which universities fit best for you, your goals, and your future. That starts with what university programs can provide for you. First, let’s understand what types of programs you should be researching.
Cooperative Education (Co-op): Gain real-world experience in your major’s field while in school. This combines education with work experience. Co-ops tend to have longer periods of full-time employment as it is during the semester.
Internship: On-the-job experience to give students a glimpse into exploring different careers within their major. This can be done during the semester or traditionally during break sessions.
Research: Collaborate with other students, faculty staff, and professors on a research project. This is extremely valuable for further education requirements such as graduate school.
Study Abroad: Take college courses in a foreign country for a semester to learn and explore other cultures.
For this email, we will be focusing on Co-op and internship programs.
These are programs that will help you build your resume, increase networking connections, and develop professional skills. Gaining experience with these opportunities will make you a more competitive candidate in the job market. Building your skills early with hands-on experience from either Co-ops or internships will allow you to be more familiar with the workplace—deeming you as more valuable, especially to top firms from the Top Fortune 500 Companies.
There are many other benefits to these programs. Not only do Co-ops and internships give you hands-on experience but some programs provide even more developmental skills. These programs often include leadership webinars, professional workshops (becoming a leader or understanding negotiation skills), networking events, 1:1 mentorship, and a form of compensation (paid or academic credit). These benefits may vary between companies.
Universities with Notable Programs
University programs are designed for students to explore careers within their major--understanding what they like and don’t like. Universities focus on helping students get into dream companies. Some top companies have close relationships with certain universities—making it more likely for students from those universities to be recruited by that company. Here are a couple of ranked schools that are known for their career advising and professional programs:
Northeastern University (20.5% acceptance rate): Northeastern has the #1 ranked Co-op program in the nation. Northeastern’s program requires students to take a preparation course to learn about resume building, interviews, and workplace etiquette. Northeastern provides students with 1:1 engagement for students to get Co-op opportunities.
Massachusetts of Institute of Technology (7.3% acceptance rate): MIT has a multitude of programs such as the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives. This program matches over 900 students to internships, teaching, and researching positions around the world!
Georgia Institute of Technology (21.3% acceptance rate): Georgia Tech is known to have the largest Co-op program in the nation where they offer 5-year Co-op programs for their students. Currently, 5,292 alumni are working at the top 20 Fortune 500 Companies! This is a great place to jump-start your career interests early into a big company. Students often get offered opportunities at companies like Adobe, Intel, Ford, and many more.
Cornell University (10.7% acceptance rate): Cornell has a variety of programs that offer students to build on professional experiences, they are often STEM and business related. Companies in Silicon Valley such as Facebook, Amazon, Apple, and many more recruit from universities like Cornell. Along with Co-ops and internships, Cornell also offers undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in graduate-level research—building their resume earlier for top graduate schools in the future.

Notice that most of the universities with notable programs have low acceptance rates.
This is why having strong academics and experience from high school is important. Make this process easier for you and build your resume as early as high school. You are giving yourself more professional opportunities by starting early with your education, experience, and skills. A strong foundation in academics will set you far ahead to top schools, top programs, and soon top companies.
Landing an internship or a Co-op
Landing an internship or Co-op can be made easier when you come from a university with many connections and guidance to help you. Make sure to research the companies associated with the universities you are interested in. In the meantime, have a resume and cover letter template for the companies you apply to. Expand your individual skills by doing personal projects and completing courses. Even with no work experience, attending a top university and having personal projects, certifications, and courses can give you leverage on your resume.
My best advice is to always stay in touch with your college’s career advising department. They help guide you along the way when it comes to resumes, interviews, networking, and career fairs. They help you gain more confidence for your professional interactions as well.
Landing a Co-op or internship is very similar to the college application process. They both focus on the professional experience you’ve gained in and out of school. As of right now, look into what universities fit your career goals and provide yourself with strong academics and personal skills to get into your top university. Finally, take advantage of all the opportunities that come your way within your university’s programs.
