Dear Tigerway Team Members, Parents, and Prospective Families,
We want to continue to congratulate our Team Members at Tigerway. This week we want to give the spotlight to one of our team members who wanted to be kept anonymous. This Team Member stayed in the 1300 range for a long time and finally scored a 1400 on the October SAT! We are so proud of their hard work and dedication! Congratulations!
Important News for current High School students
The CEO of Khan Academy announced that scores in Math and English have dropped to the lowest levels ever in decades. Many students are struggling to grasp the fundamentals of Math and English.
The Covid-19 Pandemic specifically caused students to lose motivation and work ethic in school. Many have demonstrated difficulty paying attention and staying consistent. The transition to remote learning regressed the learning stages for students—making it harder to motivate them in school.
The recently released scores showed that students commonly dropped in English but dramatically dropped in Math. In the past, HALF of the test takers showed proficiency in math. However, this year only a QUARTER of the test takers showed proficiency. Most of the math questions students missed involved basic elementary math skills. None of the states had any significant improvement in their average test scores. In fact, low-income states showed the worst decline in scores.
Why is this news important?
This is a needed wake-up call for students and school administrators. Our future lies behind the hands of our students, and the plummet in scores puts our future engineers, doctors, and leaders at risk.
Tigerway Team Members are at an advantage of getting top scores at this time. Students must know THIS IS THE TIME to stand out. THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Look at what resources you have, apply new skills, and better yourself apart from other students.
The majority of students now may lack motivation and work ethic. You are not like these students. Do not let the pandemic affect you. It is not too late.
Use this time to study harder and adapt to this new environment of education. Allow coaching and tutoring to help guide you through this tough process. Not only will this allow you to be ahead of others, but you will also be closer to more opportunities in the future.
For example, as mentioned in the previous email by Coach Larry Cheung, the CFA Level 1 Exam is now open for College Juniors to take. What does this mean?
Students can now become certified a lot sooner—making them better candidates in the job market.
Knowing that there is a 30 - 40% pass rate for this exam, only students who have stronger academic fundamentals will have more promising outlooks for this exam. Stronger academics and test-taking skills stem from skills developed in early education.
Students that take this opportunity to gain effective learning habits will have a better chance of passing this exam and moving forward to being certified sooner.
PREPARE EARLY. Standing out from your applicant pool allows you to have better college and job opportunities. You develop skills much quicker and you give yourself leverage with a well-rounded application. You’ll be steps ahead of others, closer to your dream college, and even closer to your dream job.
My Experience in College
Right now, college students are in the process of the internship season. I have personally seen many students struggle to get internships because of different factors such as GPA, experience, leadership, and presentation. I have noticed most of the students who struggle, have lower GPAs. Just like how SAT exams are test-optional, showing your GPA on your resume is also optional.
Who gets more recognition?
Many of the internship postings that I have seen REQUIRE a 3.0 minimum GPA. Many top companies will cut applicants off if there is no GPA or if the GPA doesn't meet the minimum requirement.
Why is this important to know?
As a Junior in college, I have a stronger academic background that has helped me professionally grow and get internship interviews much easier than most students. I show my GPA and that is because I excel in my classes much quicker. I wouldn’t have been able to do that without seeking extra help when needed and being more engaged in all realms of my academics.
However, there is one exception. I have witnessed a person in college that recently got an Amazon Internship for Software Engineering. This person particularly does not have a good work ethic in school. Instead, they only focused on getting this internship through connections. This person specifically comes from a more affluent background and can be more careless about their academics since they have something to fall back to. Not everyone can afford to do this. Understand that this is not the best role model to follow.
If they were to apply to any other field, what would their chances of success be? Especially in a field that is continuously evolving. Their method may work today but it will not work tomorrow when the recession makes companies want even more academic experience and work ethic from their employers. The study habits and strong foundation that you build in school are long-term recipes for success.
Take my advice:
Invest in your future and look at the resources you have now. Don’t wait.
