National Standardized Exams are an important supplement to help college applications stand out. The SAT and the ACT exams are both national standardized exams that are used for college admissions. The exams both test the common theme of college readiness. Although both exams serve the same purpose for college admissions, students often struggle to understand which exam is more suitable for them to take.
It’s best to first know the fundamentals of how these exams are structured.
SAT:
On a scale of 400 - 1600
Reading: 52 questions in 65 minutes
Writing and Language: 44 questions in 35 minutes
Math: (No Calculator) 20 questions in 25 minutes (Calculator) 38 questions in 55 minutes
Includes both multiple choice and grid-in answers
Provides some math formulas while the ACT does not
Focuses on Algebra, Data Analysis, Word Problems, & Probability & Statistics.
Optional essay Included for 50 minutes
Time: ~3 hours total
Offered: March, May, June, August, October, November, and December
ACT:
On a scale of 1 - 36
English: 75 questions in 45 minutes
Math: (All Calculator) 60 questions in 60 minutes
All multiple choice
Focuses on a greater variety with Algebra, Geometry, Trignometry, & Logarithms.
Reading: 40 questions in 35 minutes
Reading Passages are longer than SAT exams
Science: 40 questions in 35 minutes
Optional writing section included for 40 minutes
Time: ~ 3 - 4 hours
Offered: February, April, June, July, September, October, December
Which exam should you take?
Depending on your major and personal preferences, some students may prefer one over the other.
The ACT has an additional science section that the SAT does not—leading more students who excel in math and science to favor the ACT much more than the SAT. However, the science section on the ACT embeds reading comprehension with data analysis that is already tested in the SAT Reading section.
Ultimately, college admissions take either of these standardized exams to test your college readiness. One is not preferred more than the other. Your score is what matters the most out of these exams—that is why it is important to know which you are more comfortable with taking.
This all depends on your personal strengths and weaknesses. Start by taking a practice exam for each standardized test and see which you are more comfortable with taking.
