Dear Tigerway Team Members, Parents, and Prospective Families,
At Tigerway, we offer two different types of coaching options: group coaching with Coach Larry Chueng and 1:1 coaching with an assigned private coach. Both have had success with helping many students become Megastars, Team Members crossing the 1400 boundary for SAT scores. Students can be impacted by these class settings based on their learning styles and study habits. Group coaching can be effective when being introduced to a subject. However, many students are turning towards the 1:1 option for specific needs.
Group coaching allows students to learn strategies to improve their scores while having peers around them. Group coaching constructs the foundation of fundamentals that all students should know about in the subject. On the other hand, with 1:1 coaching, Private coaches develop personal connections with students to help understand the student’s individual learning styles and academic needs.
1:1 Coaches take note of the Students’:
Strengths and weaknesses: Target which areas the student needs more improvement on
Learning style and pace: Determine how a student learns best; slow or fast-paced; visual, hands-on learner
Academic goals: Provide a pathway for students to build their college profile by first focusing on their SAT exams and grades then extracurriculars
Motivations: Understand what drives them towards their academic goals or find/give them motivations for their goals
Private 1:1 coaching is useful when a student needs individualized help that covers more than just the fundamentals. 1:1 coaches can identify what topics the students struggle most on and create personalized curricula for those students.
Given the 1:1 connection being built, the specific engagement in 1:1 coaching can also make students feel more comfortable with asking questions to their coach. Students often feel more confident with their work in and out of school because of the extra help they are provided with to excel in their classes. With this confidence, they are more likely to stand out and strive in all of their classes.
The Statistics of Different Coaching Styles
A research study was conducted with 1,624 students that went through different forms of tutoring. To no surprise, private 1:1 tutoring had the largest effect on the student’s academic progress. In this study, internet tutoring is defined as online tutors ONLY providing tutorial videos via web chat. Because this gave the least engagement for the student and the student’s needs, this disconnected tutoring style had the least effect. Relative to small group coaching and live lectures by tutors, students can have some effect as the lectures cover all of the material for the subject.
Over 80% of 96 reported studies indicate that there were statistically significant effects with tutoring helping students learn more effectively.
From this study, private 1:1 coaching is the best option as it leads to better relationship building and more guidance for future goals. Each private coach will know exactly what’s best for the student’s learning habits.

The Difference Between Group Coaching and Private 1:1 Coaching
Group Coaching
Group coaching is most appropriate for students that are looking to build fundamental skills. Group coaching will most likely cover every topic needed for the subject. There is no specific adjustment for group coaching.
At Tigerway, the group coaching curriculum stresses on topics that are predicted to be in the upcoming SAT exam. Team Members are expected to take responsibility for their self-study habits. They are also expected to reach out to a coach on their own when they need help (in class, during office hours, or in Discord).
To ensure engagement, Tigerway has office hours (Saturdays 1 - 2 pm after lectures 9 - 12 pm) for Team Members to come and ask for guidance on any topic ranging from SAT questions to extra help with school or college applications.
Every student has different needs and skills. However, not every student can adjust to a group setting as it is more independent compared to 1:1 coaching.
Private 1:1 Coaching
Private 1:1 coaching can benefit any student overall. Private coaches will help students gain better study habits and learn the skills of becoming independent.
The guidance in 1:1 coaching allows the private coach to see the student’s learning style and motivations early. Students will be able to understand their learning techniques SOONER and gain study skills that help them prosper in and out of school. The engagement in 1:1 coaching helps students know more about themselves and their academic preferences—making them more advanced and prepared for future courses.
Private 1:1 coaching is an opportunity to learn more about themselves, improve their academics, and become more confident overall. A well-rounded college application will come out of 1:1 coaching. The skills learned in 1:1 coaching are extremely useful for more advanced classes, top college exposure, and future work experiences.
