Tigerway August SAT Exam | The importance of SAT Preparation
August SAT Forecast Available on Discord for Tigerway Members | Class Recap of August 20th
Dear Tigerway Team Members, Parents, and Prospective Families,
In just 7 days, Tigerway Team Members will go on to take the August SAT.
Like clockwork, with every SAT we see significant jumps in scores, scores in the 1400+ range, and many members breaking the 1500s. Success is imminent for Tigerway as Team members have been allocating their time by following the Tigerway model for months.
Rising seniors can move forward following this exam with Tigerway’s many methods of seeking advice and strategy for the upcoming college admissions season. When Team members take the initiative, it pays off big in the end. Tigerway members secure great wins and admissions into top schools across the nation along with many scholarships.
At Tigerway, Team members are supported with several unique strategies that will help them succeed on the SAT. The opportunity to reach out to coaches at any time with questions in and out of sessions, directed content, timed drills, focused homework, and accurate forecasting allows the content of the exam to become more familiar. Familiarity with the exam is the key to mastering it.
When Team Members are in class, the focus is split between content that shows up on the exam with the highest frequency and timed drills to practice time management. This weekend in Tigerway, we covered pertinent topics in both Math and English.
MATH
Systems of Equations: The Inflection Points to Focus On.
Our content this week for the mathematics portion of the exam focused on systems of equations. This unit of math focuses on multitasking: you’re being asked to solve two equations at once.
We covered the subcategories of systems of equations problems that are most likely to be encountered on the SAT, including:
→ Direct Solve using Substitution or Elimination
→ Word Problems
→ Graphs
→ Abstraction (parts of the equation are alluded to; you must construct the problem)
→ Roots and Solutions
A big thing we emphasize in our strategy is knowing not only how, but when to use substitution/elimination specifically to save time. It is important to be well versed in both so these decisions for efficiency can be made on the clock.
One last key insight from this lesson: remember to read the wording of the problem carefully to decide whether or not the correct answer may be asking for 1 or more solutions. Reading is everything. Math and English are heavily intertwined, and Tigerway members are working on becoming masters of deciphering both.
ENGLISH
Low Hanging Fruit: Modifiers/Parallelisms/Comparisons
The section Tigerway members covered this week is easy compared to the normal topics we cover, but there is a key reason behind that: missing the easy content on the exam is a big no for exam strategy. By staying on top of the “low hanging fruit”, team members can then focus their attention on some of the biggest topics in grammar, such as add/delete/revise.
We reviewed rhetorical terms and common modes of parallelism, such as anaphora, antithesis, epistrophe, and symploce. Learning how to recognize and catch these devices in usage is an important part of getting those easy and impactful points, all part of boosting exam scores.
A big integrated topic with this unit is word choice. Choosing your words with precision and intention coupled with reading often has a direct impact on scores.
In our drills, we covered some examples of common problems and then utilized the strategy of time cuts to once again get our team members feeling comfortable for the exam. No surprise, but Tigerway Members crushed these drills.
One last key detail that has real-world impact: Active vs. Passive voice. Tigerway teaches Team members how to make their voices be heard, and to let their messages have an impact. Using an active voice in writing makes all the difference in communicating big ideas. Grammar skills make all the difference in both the SAT and real-world outcomes.
These last few days leading up to August 27th, Tigerway members will be hard at work preparing. Our content paired with efficient practice will lead members to success. For the members not taking the August SAT, a mock exam will be administered to gauge scores and gain real-time practice. For prospective team members, the time to join Tigerway has never been better as the strategy will keep preparing members after mock exam week.
Good luck on the upcoming exams Tigerway Team Members!
