Dear Tigerway Community,
I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Calvin Cheung, and I’m so excited to let you know that I am now leading Tigerway’s In-Person Coaching Program.
Earlier this year, our program’s Founder Larry gave me an opportunity to reopen our in-person studio location in Boston.
This is me below getting ready for our group coaching sessions where I cover SAT Preparation as well as College Consulting content.
Going forward, I will periodically write email recaps of valuable concepts that we have gone over in class to give you an idea of what we have been covering.
The Digital SAT is a powerful way for students to demonstrate their academic rigor for college admissions. Our program is designed to help students improve their math and English skills while raising their SAT Scores.
If you’re interested in-person coaching, please schedule a call with me or our Program Officer Sreya Ravi, and we can brainstorm how we can help you!
In the past week, we covered the following concepts!
Overview: This week in math, we focused on the properties and types of triangles, as well as methods for solving problems involving triangles. Understanding these concepts is essential for geometry questions on the SAT.
Key Topics Covered:
Types of Triangles:
By Sides:
Equilateral Triangle: All sides are equal, and all angles are 60 degrees.
Isosceles Triangle: Two sides are equal, and the angles opposite those sides are equal.
Scalene Triangle: All sides and angles are different.
By Angles:
Acute Triangle: All angles are less than 90 degrees.
Right Triangle: One angle is exactly 90 degrees.
Obtuse Triangle: One angle is greater than 90 degrees.
Triangle Properties:
Sum of Angles: The sum of the interior angles of a triangle is always 180 degrees.
Pythagorean Theorem: In right triangles, a2+b2=c2, where c is the hypotenuse.
Triangle Inequality Theorem: The sum of the lengths of any two sides of a triangle is greater than the length of the third side.
Special Triangles:
45-45-90 Triangle: In this isosceles right triangle, the sides are in the ratio 1:1:2.
30-60-90 Triangle: The sides are in the ratio 1:3:2.
Area of a Triangle:
Formula: Area=21×base×height
Applications:
Problem Solving: We solved various problems involving finding missing sides and angles, using properties and theorems.
Real-Life Scenarios: Discussed applications such as in construction and design, where understanding triangle properties is crucial.
English: Transition Words
Overview: In English, we focused on the use of transition words to improve the coherence and flow of writing. Recognizing and using transition words correctly is crucial for answering SAT Writing questions effectively.
Key Topics Covered:
Types of Transition Words:
Addition: and, also, furthermore, moreover, in addition
Contrast: but, however, on the other hand, yet, although
Cause and Effect: because, therefore, thus, consequently, as a result
Sequence: first, second, next, then, finally
Example: for example, for instance, such as, in particular
Conclusion: in conclusion, to sum up, in summary, finally
Functions of Transition Words:
Connecting Ideas: Helping to link sentences and paragraphs to create a smooth flow.
Signaling Relationships: Indicating the relationship between ideas, whether it's contrast, addition, cause and effect, etc.
Placement of Transition Words:
Within a Sentence: Example - "She was tired; therefore, she went to bed early."
At the Beginning of a Sentence: Example - "Moreover, the project was completed ahead of schedule."
Between Paragraphs: To signal a shift or continuation in thought.
Applications:
Practice Exercises: We practiced inserting appropriate transition words into passages and sentences to enhance clarity and coherence.
Real-Life Scenarios: Discussed how transition words are used in writing essays, reports, and everyday communication to make writing more effective and understandable.
Conclusion
By understanding the properties of triangles in math and mastering the use of transition words in English, students are better equipped to handle SAT questions efficiently. These skills not only contribute to higher test scores but also improve overall problem-solving and writing abilities.
I look forward to helping more students succeed in our motivating in-person program environment!
Best,
Coach Calvin Cheung
