Last week Coach Larry Chueng had an exclusive webinar with Jack Delehey discussing the new landscape of the SAT. In this email, we will cover the top tips from the Webinar.
Larry’s Observations:
The webinar opened with a deep dive into the college admissions landscape. Here's what you should know:
Admissions officers continue to emphasize the importance of GPA and class rigor as demonstrated on your high school transcript.
Selective schools are still prioritizing SAT and ACT scores, even in a test-optional world, with an emphasis on scores over the 50th percentile.
Your extracurricular activities play a crucial role in shaping your college admissions story.
Data from Tigerway revealed that the cutoffs for Ivy League schools are notably high, hovering around 1400. Interestingly, scores between 1470 and 1500 are statistically similar in weighting range on your college application.
Admission to the top 50 schools requires at least a 1400
The most significant part discussed in the webinar was the introduction of the New Digital SAT:
The test is notably shorter than the previous format.
In the English section, vocabulary questions (known as sentence completion questions) are reintroduced, emphasizing context.
International students may face greater challenges with vocabulary questions, providing an advantage for U.S. students.
The grammar section is now more contextualized, making it more difficult than the traditional SAT.
English: reading and writing 64 minutes total with two 32 min modules
Math: 70 minutes with two 35-minute modules
Students must prepare with how to use the graphing calculator provided. These strategies are much more easily coached.
Module 2 will scale their questions easier or more difficult based on the performance of Module 1. This means EVERY QUESTION COUNTS. The first impression is going to determine the entire trajectory of the exam.
If you see an easier Module 2, do not get discouraged. Use this chance to understand the exam. Most people get their best score on their 2nd or 3rd attempt.

Jack’s Observations:
Jack shared invaluable insights covering various aspects of the college admissions process:
He outlined four tiers of the college admissions process:
High school grades and class rigor
Standardized scores “Even in the test-optional world, SAT and ACTs are still essential characteristics for top schools”
Google “[College Name] Common Datasets” to understand how each factor in college admissions is weighed
College essays - Personal Statement & supplements
Start working on this between junior and senior year
Your story
Consider inviting college admission reps to your high school. Initiate a reach-out!
For teacher recommendations, think about this question: “Whose teaching has had the most impact on my intellectual growth”
For college essays, be specific! Write an essay ONLY YOU can write
Write about an essay you enjoy writing.
Have a clear theme for your application to make it stand out.
