Digital SAT Practice: Paired Passages and Functions
This email is written by Program Officer Jasmine Ngo
Tigerway Team Members and Families,
This week we will be covering two EMERGING SAT topics: Paired Passages and Functions. The questions that we will be going over today are from the upcoming Digital SAT.
If you are interested in more practice and SAT Prep Coaching, book a call with us here!
We encourage you to take a moment to answer them independently. This will allow you to gauge your initial understanding and thought process. It's perfectly fine if you don't know the answers right away; that's part of the learning process! Once you've taken a moment to answer the questions, read on for our commentary and explanations!
Paired Passages
With Paired Passages, you want to understand the main idea and central beliefs of each text. After taking note of the main idea and central beliefs you want to ask yourself, what relationship would the two authors have?
There are different types of relationships to choose from:
Agree on a situation
With similar approaches and goals
With different approaches and goals
Disagree on a situation
Continue
One passage tells you a solution to the other, etc
In this case, text 2 explains that Cáceres and colleagues expected to find at the end of their study that the pools they stocked with multiple zooplankton species would have greater diversity than the pools they stocked with single zooplankton species but that was not the case.
Therefore the answer is C.
Functions
Given: Function f(0) = 86, for each increase in x by 1, the value of f(x) decreases by 80%.
This means when x = 1, the value of f(x) = (100 -80)% = 20% of 86
This can be expressed as (0.20)(86) = 17.2
This means f(1) = 17.2
Similarly, when x = 2, the value of f(x) is 20% of 17.2
(0.20)(17.2) = 3.44 which is the value of f(2)
Therefore the answer is 3.44
